Peter Mathews interviews David Cobb about Corporate Personhood

KPFK SPECIAL PROGRAMMING | KPFK Standing Up for Social Justice with Peter Mathews, episode 1 | Guest: David Cobb, Spokesperson for Move to Amend

“Corporations are not people, and money is not speech.” This statement may seem axiomatic, however, for the wealthiest people in this country (The United States of America), it is an “E” ticket to their own personal Wonderland. Because of four landmark cases heard before the U.S. Supreme Court and argued in favor of the owners of corporations[1], a door has been openned that must be shut: Incredibly, corporations currently hold the legal status of being “Natural Persons” with the same constitutional rights as everyone else. The problem remains that they obviously are not. This travisty must be reversed or we will lose this nation and all it’s rights and priveleges to greedy corporate interests. –Brett Covey

David1360850373-david_cobb01 Cobb is the National Projects Director of Democracy Unlimited and one of several spokespersons for Move to Amend, a coalition calling for an amendment to the US Constitution to unequivocally state that inalienable rights belong to human beings only, and that money is not a form of protected free speech under the First Amendment and can be regulated in political campaigns.[2]

A lawyer and political activist, David has sued corporate polluters, lobbied elected officials, run for political office, and has been arrested for non-violent civil disobedience.  He truly believes we must use ALL the tools in the toolbox to effect the systemic social change we so desperately need.[3]

Formed in September 2009, Move to Amend is a coalition of hundreds of organizations and hundreds of thousands of individuals committed to social and economic justice, ending corporate rule, and building a vibrant democracy that is genuinely accountable to the people, not corporate interests.
