Peter Mathews Predicts Beginning of Government Shutdown in 5 Hours; Pain Will Begin Slowly and Build

Peter Mathews on KTLK AM 1150, The David Cruz Show: Long shutdown will cause severe economic damage; short one will still cost millions. The 1995 (6 day) and 1996 (21 day) Government Shutdowns, the longest ones since 1976, were based on Republican and Democratic disagreements in Congress over Medicare cuts, budget deficits, and aid for the poor. Tomorrow’s Shutdown is occurring over Republican demands to defund and dismantle Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act), particularly Tea Party Republicans like Senator Ted Cruz. With Republicans refusing to fund the Government unless their demands are met, the following are some of what will occur at the beginning of the Shutdown: 400,000 civilian Defense Department workers will be furloughed, Veterans’ services in health, welfare, finance, and travel will stop, the federal Center for Disease Control will stop monitoring infectious  diseases, approximately 400 national parks, museums, and monuments will be closed, 800,000 federal workers will be furloughed, which will cause economic hardship and reduce economic growth. Professor Mathews urges voters to call their members of Congress and ask them to end this crisis by funding the government fully.     [Listen]  (8 min.)
