Peter Mathews on KTLK AM 1150, the David Cruz Show: Affected areas include Defense, Health, Law Enforcement, Parks, EPA, Veterans’ Health.
Professor Mathews points out that members of Congress get their full pay while they shut the government down, and other government workers will not get paid.
Congress has not produced a real Federal Budget since 2009; instead, it has kept the government going temporarily by passing stopgap spending measures, a few months at a time. Mathews says that the extreme Tea Party Republicans are primarily to blame because of their extreme views on the budget and economy. For example, in order for them to support the passing of a budget by the September 30 deadline, the Tea Party Republicans are demanding the defunding of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), which has already been passed by Congress. They are also making other unreasonable demands in order to raise the Federal Debt Ceiling by the October 17 deadline. [Listen] (9 min.)
